Bicycle City Mayor Loses Covid Battle | Surah News

Surat: Diamond City Mayor Sunil Jain has died of Covid-19 after battling the infection for more than 15 days. He was 68 years old. Jain was admitted to a private hospital and was on oxygen after his health deteriorated.
Jain, a postgraduate in physics, worked for almost 20 years in different banks and then joined his family’s textile business. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
A keen cyclist, Jain became the first cycling mayor of Surat City and raised awareness about the activity. With a team of cyclists, he started programs like Project Recycle Cycle where citizens were encouraged to donate used bicycles. He was also actively involved in Surat’s Cycle4Change campaign, promoted by the central government. Jain was active in the South Gujarat Chamber of Commerce, Veer Narmad University of South Gujarat (VNSGU) and various other organizations in different capacities. He was a founding member of the Film Society of Surat which screened award-winning films.
In 2021, Jain and other industrialists launched a counseling program for children of cops to guide them on career options.
“Sunilji was an energetic and positive man and one of the few Surtis, who influenced many lives,” said city police commissioner Ajay Tomar.
