Brompton issues e-bike recall to address fender safety issue

Brompton has issued a voluntary recall notice on all e-bikes that have not yet been fitted with a new fender upgrade as part of their e-upgrades program.

Since launching the program in late 2021, Brompton has received customer reports of issues with unupgraded mudguards, which have resulted in injuries.

If an object gets caught between the bicycle fender (the part that attaches the fender to the bicycle frame) and the tire, the fender can get caught in the tire and the rotation of the bicycle wheel is inhibited or suddenly stops.

The bike maker is offering an upgrade for all affected e-bikes from approved retailers, along with a £20 voucher for each affected bike until September 21, 2022.

Which Brompton bikes are affected?

The issue only affects e-bikes with serial numbers below 2111030089 that have not yet been fitted with a new fender as part of Brompton’s e-upgrade program.

Your bike’s 10-digit serial number will be on the manufacturer’s sticker – which is on the bike’s frame – but if you’re not sure, check to see if your bike is affected on Brompton Electrical Upgrades page.

As part of the upgrade, Brompton:

  • Install a new fender support – which increases the clearance between the mudguard and the tire.
  • Install a new battery hook – which reduces movement between the battery and the bike, minimizing battery disconnections when riding on uneven surfaces.

You can get the upgrade by booking an upgrade appointment with a local authorized Brompton Junction or Brompton Electric retailer. Head toward Find a Brompton store to locate the one closest to you.

It should be noted that although Brompton compensates retailers for carrying out these upgrades, supply is at the discretion of your local retailer. We recommend contacting them to check first.

Additionally, a £20 voucher is available for each affected bike until 21 September 2021. Go to Brompton is claiming your voucher page to redeem it.
