Community to Attend 43rd Annual Harvest Homecoming Bike Tour | News

LANESVILLE — The 43rd Harvest Homecoming Bike Tour takes place Oct. 2 and is available to cyclists of all skill levels.

The event starts at 9 a.m. and usually lasts until 4 p.m. according to organizer Bob Peters. The tour starts at the Lanesville Heritage Site at 2800 Memory Lane.

Peters has owned the Clarksville Schwinn bike shop with his wife for 49 years. He was asked to be part of the bike tour when it started 43 years ago and has been involved ever since.

“It’s mainly to help promote cycling,” Peters said of the event, although some of the proceeds from the event will also be donated. This year, the tour will donate to the Dare to Care Food Bank.

Along with Peters, the tour was organized by Southern Indiana Wheelman, Inc. and volunteers. Peters said they had many good volunteers without whom the event could not have taken place.

All those years ago, the first bike ride had just 12 riders, while Peters said turnout was usually around 500 or 600 people.

“It’s just nice to get a group of people together,” Peters said, “There are more and more people getting into [cycling] all the time, especially with this Greenway that they have, there are really a lot of people who like to ride. Whereas before, they were afraid to ride in the street.

The tour will offer several length runs, including five, 25, 40 and 65 miles, to accommodate different levels of riding.

Peters said that with the people coming together, one of the most enjoyable parts of the tour was the scenery.

“The long drive takes you to Mauckport, where there’s a lot of pretty country there, not a lot of vehicles, so that makes it [a] good driving, good exercise, good practice,” Peters said.

It costs $55 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under to register for the event. Anyone interested can register at Active.com.

Water and snacks will be provided at stops along the cycle paths, as well as a pancake and sausage breakfast from Chris Cakes and a post-ride lunch.

T-shirts will also be available for purchase at the event: $20 for short sleeves and $25 for long sleeves.
