In what is sure to divide the e-bike world, Delfast has updated its latest high-speed e-bike. The Top 2.0 is a high-powered 80 km/h (50 mph) e-bike that pushes the boundaries of e-bikes.

The Delfast Top 2.0 is the company’s latest high-speed e-bike update.
The original Delfast Top e-bike had a 3kW motor. Now the upgraded Top 2.0 will feature a more powerful 5kW rear hub motor. This increased power should help the e-bike reach its top speed of 80 km/h (50 mph) faster. Delfast claims the new acceleration will be “capable of competing with most regular cars over a quarter mile distance”.
The company also claims the new motor has better thermal management, helping it maintain higher speeds with better efficiency. They also added dust and water resistance to the motor, achieving an IP54 rating.
The energy for this powerful motor is provided by a huge 72V 48Ah battery. This represents nearly 3.5 kWh of energy.
For comparison, Zero’s entry-level FXS electric motorcycle comes with a slightly larger battery capacity of 3.6 kWh.
The video above, taken during a factory no-load test, shows the bike revving up to a rear wheel speed of 68 mph (110 km/h). Empty speed is still higher than actual road speed, but it’s an indication of how powerful the new Top 2.0 is.
And when an e-bike’s power level reaches these levels, braking is even more important than ever. The Top 2.0 has redesigned hydraulic brakes and will feature dual disc brakes on the front fork. According to Delfast:
“This new power capability forced us to redesign the bike’s braking system. To ensure safety, we administered a series of tests and installed reliable dual-disc brakes on the front fork. Such a system is installed on cross-country motorcycles and has proven itself in the most difficult conditions.

The upgrades don’t just stop at the engine or the brakes. Delfast worked hard to upgrade the controller, add a better display including a more robust GPS tracker, and change the aesthetic package. All these changes are aimed at providing a better driving experience for the user.
As the company explains:
“We have also improved and perfected the internal design of the controller, modifying its firmware. Now it offers smoother and safer engine operation over a wide range of speeds. And it is coupled with a waterproof color screen. The bike has several other details that we added, such as the protective cover for the controller, the new 3G GPS tracker and more aggressive fenders. Overall, we think this will create a better experience for riders who want more control, more power, and more dynamic riding than an e-bike can offer.
The Top 2.0 has some impressive specs, but don’t expect this one to fall into the budget e-bike category. The current Delfast Top costs around $3,900.
The upgraded model won’t start making deliveries until the fourth quarter of this year. In the meantime, anyone who buys the original Top model will have the option of waiting for the upgraded Top 2.0.
I applaud the engineering and am impressed with the e-bike.
I also think the price is pretty decent. I mean, there are other ways to go almost as fast. My 46 mph (74 km/h) urban electric motorcycle is only $2,495. But it also doesn’t have the suspension to match something like that off-road.
And here’s the catch. The Top 2.0 is truly designed as an all-terrain e-bike. This thing is not likely to fit many e-bike laws for on-road use. Off-roading is a different story, however, and that’s where this thing would shine. Think of it as something like the Sur Ron electric dirt bike, but with pedals.
Do the pedals make it a bike? Yes, technically speaking.
But is it really a bike?
Theoretically, you could pedal this thing, which might come in handy if you run out of battery while ripping through forest trails. But the Top 2.0 definitely falls into the almost motorcycle e-bike category.
