Hey, any Americans want a cheap Ducati? How about an electric? There’s only one catch: it’s a Ducati electric bike.
Oh, and it’s only cheap if you compare it to the rest of the Ducati lineup.
The electric bike is the Ducati MIG-RR.
It was first unveiled at last year’s EICMA Milan 2018 motorcycle show. We took a close look at the Ducati MIG-RR e-bike at the time, which was a good thing since it wasn’t headed to the States anytime soon.
But fast forward a year, and the company has now announced that Ducati’s first e-bike will finally be available for sale in the United States.
As CEO of Ducati North America, Jason Chinnick explained:
We introduced the Mig-RR to Europe last year, and we had a very, very positive response. Overwhelming, in fact, to the point where we knew it was a perfect opportunity for North America. And it is a premium product.
The Ducati MIG-RR was developed in partnership with e-bike manufacturer Thok. The MIG-RR is equipped with a Shimano Steps E8000 250W mid-motor. This motor produces approximately 70 Nm (51.6 ft-lb) of torque. And while you might not think 250W sounds like a lot of power, the high torque and gearing advantage of mid-drives can make them powerful enough for e-MTBs facing steep climbs.
The Ducati MIG-RR is powered by a 36V 14Ah (504Wh) down tube battery. This ability won’t earn it any price, but should last an hour or two of riding with moderate effort, or maybe a little more on the lowest power assist setting.
The bike will be available in a few models with the price ranging from around $4,000 to $7,000. It’s pretty stiff when you compare it to Amazon’s $450 e-bikes, but it’s still not the most expensive e-mountain bike I’ve ridden.
If you’re wondering who Ducati is hoping to shell out that kind of money, Chinnick provides some clues:
Our first target is our current Ducati owners, because it’s something that, as an extension of a lifestyle brand, they’re looking for—something to do when they’re not riding their bikes. And a lot of our professional athletes in the world of motorcycle racing, when they’re not racing, that’s how they train. And from road biking to mountain biking, e-bikes are really taking off here in North America. I anticipate this will be our first audience. And we also look at the existing e-mountain bike community and are able to try and capture some who may already be familiar with the Ducati brand but now realize there is a product out there for them.
It’s not Ducati’s only e-bike, as the brand recently introduced three new models. However, we have yet to hear about the availability of these models in the United States.
And Ducati has even made progress on an electric scooter, although it’s largely just a rebadged Super Soco electric scooter. But hey, at least it exists in the flesh. That’s more than we can say for the Ducati electric motorcycle that the company promised us but has yet to show any real progress.
