A long-time business in downtown Richmond has announced that it will be closing its doors this summer.
The popular Mike’s Hike and Bike on Main Street will be closing after 15 years in business at the end of June.
“Mike’s Hike and Bike, as everyone knows, will no longer exist,” owner Michael Hale said Wednesday.
However, Hale said the reason for the closure was not due to lack of activity. Hale and her family will move to a community in the West Country.
Hale said the decision to close her business was not an easy one.
“It’s kind of like taking my child off the life support system,” he explained. “It’s depressing and sad and exciting and all at the same time. I love going to new places, Richmond is the longest I’ve lived since I was 18, so we’re going somewhere new and let’s start a new adventure and the whole family is nervous and excited.
There is some good news.
The bike part of the store might live on, as someone has expressed an interest in buying that part of the business and continuing to operate.
Hale said the backpack and kayak portion of the store will be discontinued and he won’t be getting new inventory for either business.
Mike’s Hike and Bike is located at 309 W. Main Street in Richmond. Their hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
