Monday Video: Big Burghley Fences, Teeny Tiny Bicycle | Eventing Nation

The whole EN team is completely fired up and excited for the return of the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials this week (yes, it’s pretty much September already! Can you believe it?) and after a two-year COVID-induced hiatus , I wasn’t sure if anything else could make me look forward to streaming Burghley’s Cross Country this Saturday even more than I already am. Funnily enough, this video did just that – and there’s not even a single horse in it!

This video features a professional Trial Rider, Duncan Shaw of Scotland, as he tackles some of Burghley’s biggest fences on his tiny bike. Trial Biking is an extreme sport where competitors navigate an obstacle course and penalties are given for putting their foot or hand on the ground. The lowest score at the end of the competition wins. Sounds a bit familiar, right?

These fences still look massive even with a 16.3 hand Warmblood in the frame for reference, but get ready to enjoy their size and scale on a whole new level with this video.

PS My sincerest apologies to all Trial Riders reading this – I literally just googled your sport, but I see and appreciate you as a participant in a crazy sport. Come jump more cross-country courses!
