Race roundup: Carlos retains fourth place

-Carlos Rodriguez

“It was quite a tough ending, I think more than I expected. I started really strong early on the climb and then the climb felt like it was never going to end. We lost precious time against Remco, but we were also very close to our other rivals.

“I went from empty to feeling good and then feeling empty again. We had to adjust a bit today, and I didn’t go at the optimal pace because I was too busy at the beginning to want to going with the best. It pushed me more than necessary, but I’m glad I stayed with them and now we’re looking to week two.

“We don’t know how far we can go [in the general classification], but we have to be ambitious and do our best. Getting on the podium in a Grand Tour would be a dream come true… but if I crash and finish last, I also have to be happy, as long as I gave it my all and came out unscathed.

“I’m fine. Today Tao [Geoghegan Hart] was unlucky, falling. I hope he recovers well, that there was not much damage. Remco Evenepoel is a few steps above the others. But we all have to keep going and do our best, even if it’s on another level.

“Those four kilometers up to Les Praeres were very tough, but at least we had a lot of fans to support us, which makes the climb a bit more enjoyable.”
