Review: Red Ant Titanium Bike Frame Cleaner

Red Ant must work in the chemistry lab to concoct secret cleaning formulas optimized for specific frame finishes and materials. This formula is for titanium and is advertised as a fast, effective, and safe titanium bike cleaner that includes cleaning chains, plastic, rubber, and wheels, as well as the frame itself. It’s good to see that the ingredients are labeled as biodegradable and the formula is PH neutral.

Red Ant is obviously targeting a certain “specialty” market. Titanium bikes are premium anyway, and the bottle itself pretty much pushes the titanium-specific cleaner into the luxury category: the brushed aluminum spray bottle only holds 500ml. Applying quite liberally, I used about 100ml per bike, so not good value for money, and unfortunately not refillable at present.

It works well though. Riding my road-weary bike for the maximum recommended time of three to five minutes particularly impressed me with the cleanliness of the rim: ironically an aluminum surface. The brake dust melted away with little more than a wipe. General oil and grime also came off the drivetrain easily, though a decent swirl with a toothbrush is still needed on the chains.

The cleaner also did a good job on the frame. Walking around with a warm sponge was enough to remove all the dried debris. A fairly specific problem with relatively shiny raw titanium frames is fingerprints and other residue that has a dulling effect on the metal. Applying the cleaner to a satin frame, I was impressed with the streak-free finish: dull marks are hard to detect during the cleaning process, but if not cleaned thoroughly they will reappear on drying, often leading to traces of water. The Red Ant cleaner disintegrated all traces of these, restoring the frame to its raw shine.

Although the cleaner works very well, high-quality alternatives can get the job done at half the cost per milliliter and are available in larger, more convenient and economical volumes. That being said, anyone even looking to buy a titanium-specific cleaner is probably willing to pay extra, and the bottle looks good in the shop.

The scent is reminiscent of high-end, vaguely floral laundry detergent.

Without context, it works just fine.

Evaluate the product for its value:

My dosage would be £2 per cleaning.

Most brands on the market offer 1 liter (double volume) bottles for easily under £10, and concentrated citrus degreasers can be had for much less.

Unlike some cleaners on the market, you can’t even refill the Red Ant bottle, which would reduce the cost of the product itself, while saving on (expensive) foil packaging.
