Roxo Racing checks in from training camp

Roxo Racing checks in from their winter training camp in Fort Worth, Texas: As the racing season kicks off, we thought it would be the perfect time to take a look behind the scenes at the Roxo Racing women’s team’s recent training camp in Fort Worth.

Fort Worth, Texas is home to our team organization and staff. Two of our main sponsors, Roxo Energy and Scott Dennett Construction, are also present. For convenience, we are close to DFW Airport, which is squarely in the middle of the southern United States. And we have the best barbecue and the best Mexican cuisine, but you all already knew that.

Roxo

We also have the particularity of an unusually high number of small secondary roads, which lends the area to road cycling. There are many cycling clubs here, as well as organized events. Long before Gran Fondos became all the rage, Texas cyclists enjoyed a myriad “gatherings”. Gatherings, in the local parlance, are called “Towers in t-shirts” because there is always a t-shirt in the gift bag when logging in.

But this story is about our Roxo Racing women’s team cycling camp. We are in our second season together and have strengthened our sponsors and our roster. We get everyone together for team photos, of course, but mostly for our riders to spend time with each other and with the staff. Just doing this helps everyone get to know each other better, which will come in handy in future bike races.

To arrange a boot camp in advance, dates are shared and agreed upon, a camp itinerary is planned, travel and flights are booked, and accommodations are arranged. In our case, “furnished accommodation” really means that Jaime and her holy husband were willing to evict their children so that a group of racing cyclists could crash into their home. Once the flights arrived on Thursday, Team Member Jaime and your author, DS, shared airport shuttle duties to pick up and deliver our team to Team Villa. A nice dinner followed, then the lights went out for everyone.

While we could talk up the ROI of a cycling team, that’s not really why they are doing this.]

PM: Curfew [Our Saturday training will take in a group ride with all the local honchos.  Everyone who’s a reader of PezCyclingNews knows what’s in store, as group rides often devolve into strongman contests and all it takes are a few hills and some unchecked testosterone.  But the locals haven’t yet been on the receiving end of 7 Roxos…]
