CHENNAI: As part of a crackdown on racing cyclists, Greater Chennai Traffic Police have decided to warn mechanics against modifying bicycles.
As well as keeping an eye out for bike racers, police will now hunt down garages where mechanics modify two-wheelers for racing.
Police have received complaints about bike stunts as well as ongoing drag races in the city. Following this, a team of traffic wardens and armed reserve personnel were deployed to areas like Adyar, Napier Bridge, Thiru-Vi-ka Bridge, Radhakrishnan Salai, Washermenpet, Mint, Vyasarpadi to keep a eye on cyclists.
“We are going to launch a campaign to curb drag racing. Traffic police will locate places where drag races are held and catch those who participate. Not just cyclists, but we will also go to garages, mechanics and those involved in the modification of bicycles to warn them, ”said a police officer.
The traffic police decided to obtain information about these drivers from these mechanics and garages. Apart from this, the traffic police will also keep an eye on social media platforms where meetings are held to organize races.
Police have called on young people not to participate in bike races or do stunts on the roads endangering the lives of others.
