Authorities in West Palm Beach, Florida are investigating the death of a cyclist who died from a drawbridge when it opened.
There was a man who tried to help this woman as she clung to the raised bridge, but unfortunately he couldn’t save her unfortunately. And tragically, she felt herself land about 50 to 60 feet below where the mechanical parts of the bridge were and she died instantly. Investigators say this horrific series of events began around 1:00 p.m. when the woman was riding her bicycle along the bridge connecting the city of Palm Beach with West Palm Beach, next to the eastbound lanes. She had almost reached the end of the bridge about 10 feet from the end of the bridge which rose at one point and she tried to hold on but just couldn’t. She has not been identified in West Palm Beach. Police detectives are currently contacting his family. West Palm Beach police are investigating and some of their top questions right now include how this could have happened in the first place and who is responsible. Investigators say the Department of Transportation contracts, a company called Florida Drawbridge, were incorporated to be the bidders for the bridge. There are arms crossed, there are warning signs and there are safety procedures in place for bridge operators to follow with multiple steps and multiple levels of checks to ensure there are no cars or people on the bridge when it goes up. So this is all part of the investigation is to determine if procedure was followed or if this woman crossed while the bridge after the signals went down the bridge was closed until just before seven o’clock. millimeter
